Weather & Course Evacuation

Suspension of racing procedures, zone responsibilities, and on-shore coordination

Monitoring & Decision Authority

Weather Monitoring

The weather will be monitored regularly throughout the regatta. Should racing need to be suspended, every effort should be made to assist crews, our people, and volunteers in moving to the designated safety area.

The Chief Referee will make all evacuation decisions with input from referees on the water as requested. Please keep radios clear for evacuation-related traffic only during a suspension.

Completing Heats

Where possible, completing all heats before suspending is ideal — but only if it does not require people to stay out too long. If possible, crews will be raced down the course before a suspension is called.

Course Zone Responsibilities

Starter — First 500m of Course

The Starter oversees the first 500 meters of the course during an evacuation. Coordinates getting crews off the start and moving to safety.

Chief Referee — 500m to 1500m

The remaining 500m–1500m of the course is under the control of the Chief Referee. Under their direction, referees on the water assist in ensuring the course has been cleared of all athletes.

On-Shore Responsibilities

Control Commission

The Control Commission is responsible for ensuring that launch dock and recovery dock personnel and volunteers are under appropriate cover during a weather suspension.

Please note which crews recover at your docks so that an inventory of all shells can be communicated to the Chief Referee.

Radio Discipline During Evacuation

During a course evacuation, keep all radio traffic clear for evacuation-related communications only. Non-essential transmissions must wait until the all-clear is given.
